Palomar College is an academic community dedicated to the development of the whole person. The mission of BHCS is to come alongside students in their process of becoming healthy adults, offering them a place to receive both nurture and challenge.
Our goal is to help students benefit fully from the college experience by supporting their personal, social, and emotional well-being. Our confidential and culturally sensitive services include counseling, crisis intervention, outreach, and prevention. In addition, we provide consultation and referrals to students and faculty/staff.
BHCS provides individual, couples, and group counseling services for registered Palomar students as well as consultation and outreach for the campus community. For more detailed information, visit the BHCS website.
Currently enrolled students who have paid the Student Health Fee ($19 for Summer semester, $21 for Fall and Spring semesters) are eligible to receive services. There is no minimum unit requirement.
Behavioral Health Counseling Services invites all students to make an initial appointment to meet with one of our counselors and discuss their concerns. During this initial meeting, the counselor, in collaboration with the student, will recommend services within Behavioral Health Counseling Services or the community and assist students in obtaining the appropriate services to meet their needs.

The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is a department within the division of Student Services which offers specialized instruction and services to students with various documented disabilities as mandated by the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and their respective revisions. These disabilities include physical, visual, auditory, communication, learning, and psychological disabilities which might impose an educational limitation within the college environment. Faculty and Staff are committed to ensuring access to all facets of the college and to providing accommodations and services to promote student success within college programs.
Education planning, career guidance, and personal counseling for students with physical, learning, vision, hearing, communication, and psychological disabilities.
Palomar College’s Disability Resource Center (DRC) provides robust academic, vocational, and personal counseling services for students with documented disabilities. DRC counselors assist with comprehensive academic services including but not limited to: certificate/associate degree options, transfer preparation, transcript review, education planning, the semester course selection, and scheduling. Appropriate academic accommodations are authorized and established each semester. In addition, students are provided with appropriate campus and community referrals as needed. DRC counselors are here to guide and support students through personal or disability-related concerns that may interfere with academic success.
Students will need to meet with a DRC counselor at least once per year. Continuing students with the DRC who have met with a DRC counselor within one year, may return to the DRC to pick up completed accommodation forms three working days after submitting an Accommodations Request online through MyDRC. Please contact the DRC before stopping over to ensure your forms are ready for pick up.
Test accommodations are approved and provided on a case-by-case basis to students with documented disabilities. Frequently used test accommodations include extended time, distraction reduced environment, or use of a computer to take a test. It is important that you plan well in advance of your first test so that you have what you need on the day of the exam.
Students are responsible for requesting note-taking accommodations from a DRC counselor. This request can occur during the initial intake or anytime thereafter during a drop-in or scheduled appointment. The counselor will review disability documentation and engage in an interactive session with the student to determine if the accommodation can be approved. Once approved it is placed on the student’s AAP.
Students with a prescribed accommodation for mobility assistance (DRC’s Cart Service) as reflected on their Accommodation Letter may request mobility assistance, namely Cart Service, from the DRC. Mobility services are available during regular DRC business hours. Additionally, mobility services will be suspended during rain, campus emergencies, and at any time to uphold safety.
A person with learning disabilities has an average to above-average intelligence, yet has significant differences in how they remember, understand, and express information. Learning disabilities can affect students in reading, writing, oral language, and mathematics.
If you suspect you have learning disabilities or have prior documentation, please come to our office to discuss the next appropriate step for you.
The Disability Resource Center (DRC) proudly provides Deaf and hard-of-hearing students with access to services including Sign Language Interpreting, Real-Time Captioning, note-taking services, and an Assistive Listening Device (ALD) loan program in an effort to promote language equality, empower students, and assist them in the attainment of their academic and vocational goals.
The Access Technology Center (ATC), located on the first floor of the Library, is designed to provide training in the use of assistive technology for Palomar College students with disabilities. The ATC is also where students, faculty, and staff can explore assistive technology, discover technology solutions, and receive training and support in the use of assistive technology. Computers in the ATC are equipped with Windows 10 and the latest version of Microsoft Office.
Many students with disabilities find it difficult, if not impossible, to read and understand a standard textbook. Through the Alternate Media Center, textbooks and class materials can be converted to audio, Braille, large print, or other alternate formats. Students who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with motor impairments and learning disabilities, may qualify for services through the Alternate Media Center.
Accessible furniture (a free-standing desk or table and chair) are located in most of the classrooms on campus. Science labs feature accessible stations that are accessible for wheelchairs and have adjustable or accessible-height work surfaces. However, there are some buildings featuring classrooms which do not have free-standing table/desks or chairs. Further, you may have a furniture need or request that is more specific.

In keeping with Palomar College’s commitment to creating a safe campus, the Pride Center exists, within the oversight of the PC3H, to provide a space for members of the college community to explore issues relating to sexual and gender identities, practices, and politics. The Center offers LGBTQ students and staff a secure place to study, converse, explore, and join in a common celebration of their experience. It also promotes student leadership, professional and academic equity, and visibility of gender and sexual minorities in addition to providing educational resources and programs for the LGBTQ and Allies community.
